Michael Fulmes to Receive Distinguished Service Award

TORONTO, April 13 /CNW/ - RTNDA Canada - The Association of Electronic Journalists - will recognize a long-standing member of the association, Michael Fulmes, with the Distinguished Service Award. This award honours a member who has played a major role in the continuing success of RTNDA Canada. It is presented in recognition and appreciation of outstanding contribution and exemplary distinguished service rendered for the benefit and advancement of broadcast journalism and RTNDA Canada.

Michael Fulmes has been an active member of RTNDA Canada since 1988. He has served on various committees with the association during this time, including as Prairie Regional Director TV, and Atlantic Regional Director TV. For the past few years he has been a driving force in the success of our awards program, serving as Awards Chair.

It has been said that if you want something done, give it a busy person. Fulmes has clearly been that busy person for RTNDA Canada, and many other associations. In addition to his exemplary service with RTNDA, he has served in advisory roles for NAIT, King's College, Atlantic Media Institute, Crime Stoppers, and Saskatchewan Economic Development BOSS program.

Fulmes career in television started in hometown Regina, with CKCK Television, shortly after graduating from Mount Royal College in 1978. He worked as Executive Producer and News Director with CTV Saskatchewan before joining Global in 1998. He left Regina in 1999 to head up Global News Maritimes for a few years before returning West as Managing Editor, then News Director at Global Edmonton.

"I first met Michael several years ago when we both worked in Halifax." Said RTNDA Canada president Andy LeBlanc. "We worked for different newsrooms, and we were sitting at the same table at a community media awareness event. That's where I first witnessed the energy and enthusiasm that he incessantly brings to RTNDA. As Awards chairperson, Michael Fulmes has tirelessly contributed hours, days and weeks to organizing and adjudicating our coveted awards. The Distinguished Service Award is one he had no part in deciding. The board of directors was unanimous in offering him this well-deserved recognition."

RTNDA Canada is the voice of electronic journalists and news managers in Canada.  The members of RTNDA Canada recognize the responsibility of broadcast journalists to promote and to protect the freedom to report independently about matters of public interest and to present a wide range of expressions, opinions and ideas. The RTNDA Canada Code of Ethics, adopted by the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, is used to measure fairness and accuracy in the profession.
