2009 RTNDA Canada President's Award Winner

TORONTO, March 10 /CNW/ - RTNDA Canada - The Association of Electronic
Journalists is pleased to announce that Henry Champ is this year's recipient
of the RTNDA President's Award.
RTNDA's highest honour is presented annually to recognize individuals or
groups that have brought distinction to, or made major contributions to
broadcast journalism.
From his start as a newspaper reporter in Brandon, Manitoba, Henry
Champ's career in journalism has taken him all over the world and to the
frontlines of some of the biggest stories of the past 40 years. He was among
the last correspondents to leave Vietnam during the fall of Saigon and among
the first Canadian journalists to be admitted into the People's Republic of
China.
As an investigative reporter for CTV's W5, he exposed corruption and
mishandling of Canadian foreign aid to Haiti, covered police brutality in
Toronto that led to a task force commission into the issue and helped to free
a Canadian citizen wrongly imprisoned in Texas.
He later worked for NBC News where he was assigned to the network's
bureaus in Frankfurt, London and Warsaw, from which he covered the tumultuous
political events in Europe and the Middle East in the late 1980's. He also
served five years as congressional correspondent in Washington for NBC.
In 1993, Henry moved to Halifax to join the anchor team of CBC Morning
News and went on to become CBC Newsworld's correspondent in Washington, DC. He
retired days after what many say is the biggest story of the century so far --
the historic election of the United States' first African-American President.
Henry still lives in Washington and writes a column for cbc.ca. He is
also the Chancellor of Brandon University.
The RTNDA President's Award will be presented to Henry Champ at the
President's Dinner in Toronto on June 26, 2009.
